The Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic have reached the end of their update journeys, with no further releases planned – not even security patches. Both models launched in August 2021 and hold a notable place in the brand’s history as the first Galaxy watches to run Wear OS, following earlier models such as the Watch3, which used Tizen.
The two smartwatches arrived with Wear OS 4 out of the box and were subsequently upgraded to version 6.0, running with One UI Watch 8 on top. That remains their final Android version, and the devices will now stop receiving the periodic maintenance that keeps them protected against emerging threats.
What Samsung’s security bulletin reveals
Samsung’s latest security bulletin outlines which devices continue to receive updates and how frequently, whether on a monthly or quarterly basis. The Watch4 models no longer appear on that list, confirming their departure from the maintenance schedule.
The closely related Galaxy Watch FE does remain supported. That model arrived in 2024 as a re-launch of the 40mm Watch4. While there were a handful of changes, the watch crucially uses the same Exynos W920 chipset, paired with the same 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The W920 chip also powers the Galaxy Watch5 duo, which will continue to receive patches.
Five years of support for the Watch4 generation
The final update the Galaxy Watch4 received came in August. This generation enjoyed a solid run, having been supported for five years. That timeframe aligns with what newer devices can expect, as even the latest Galaxy Watch9 and the Watch Ultra2 are set to receive five years of OS and security updates.
Owners of the Watch4 and Watch4 Classic can continue using their devices, but they will no longer benefit from the security fixes that shield against newly discovered vulnerabilities. The hardware continues to function, yet it now sits outside Samsung’s active support programme, unlike the Watch FE and Watch5 models built around the same Exynos W920 chipset.
