Apple Reference Image is a feature Apple appears to be developing for iOS that can verify when a photograph was captured using an iPhone camera. Code references discovered in the iOS 27 beta 5 point to a system capable of embedding provenance metadata into iPhone photographs at the point of capture, allowing users to demonstrate where an image originated and that it is not the product of AI fakery.
The feature is not currently live, and a privacy disclosure in the beta notes that it will be switched off by default. When or if it rolls out, it can be enabled through Settings > Camera > Reference Image > Reference Mode. Only photographs taken with a new “Reference” option in the iPhone Camera app will include the provenance information required for authentication.
How the authentication process works
Verification does not happen automatically. Instead, users must tap a Reference badge on the photograph. This sends the raw image and its embedded provenance data, including sensor signatures, capture time frame, and unique hardware identifiers, to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers for verification. An authenticated version is then returned with a uniquely assigned ID.
Apple does not access the raw photo itself during this process, but it may receive sensor data that allows it to prevent images connected to compromised sensors from being authenticated, or to retroactively revoke prior authentication on images associated with a given sensor. Authenticated photos can be viewed on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Comparison with existing standards
Based on this description, Apple Reference Image works in a similar way to the C2PA Content Credentials provenance standard, which can be used to trace how and where an image was made, and whether generative AI tools were used to create or manipulate it. Camera manufacturers including Canon, Nikon, Sony, FujiFilm, and Leica have gradually introduced C2PA into their hardware, and Google’s Pixel 10 phone cameras also support the standard. Apple has notably avoided adopting it.
C2PA is not known for its reliability, which may explain why Apple appears to favour developing its own system. Introducing a provenance system for iPhone photography also indicates that Apple is placing its weight behind labelling human-made works across online platforms. Instagram head Adam Mosseri has suggested this may be easier to achieve than identifying and labelling AI-generated content.
The disclosure appearing in the iOS beta confirms that Apple Reference Image will remain off by default when it becomes available.
