Pixel Buds voice controls have arrived through the latest companion app update, allowing users to adjust several key earbud settings using only their voice. The rollout follows earlier promises made alongside the launch of an olive colour variant of the Pixel Buds Pro 2, with software updates confirmed to arrive within the month.
The update takes the Pixel Buds app to version 1.0.981607934 and is already rolling out via the Play Store. The headline addition is a connection with Gemini, which enables voice control for a range of important earbud functions.
What the Gemini connection controls
Through the new integration, users can adjust settings such as EQ preset, ANC mode, conversation detection and touch controls. These are the specific options mentioned within the Gemini app, though the list does not appear to be exhaustive.
The most practical additions are likely those linked to active noise cancellation and the equaliser, although touch controls can also be edited entirely by voice. This marks a step forward in how earbud settings can be managed hands-free.
How to access the new features
To use the new voice control features, the latest version of the Pixel Buds app must be installed alongside the Gemini app. Once both are in place, a voice command such as “Hey Gemini, turn up the bass” brings up a Gemini overlay, followed by a “Connecting to Pixel Buds” message. A verbal confirmation then indicates that the setting has been changed.
With this update, Google moves ahead of several rivals in the earbud space. Apple earbuds, including the AirPods Pro 3, can adjust noise-cancelling settings through Siri, but that capability does not extend to EQ settings. Samsung’s earbuds, such as the Galaxy Buds 4, offer a more limited set of voice commands, covering music and volume control as well as answering and rejecting calls.
The Pixel Buds Pro 2 gained the new olive colour variant, and the accompanying software updates deliver the voice control functionality now reaching users. The latest app version is available now via the Play Store, with the Gemini app required to enable the full set of voice commands.
