Nothing OS 5.0 has been made official, marking the company’s next major software update, with the Open Beta opening on 26 August for the Nothing Phone (3). Built on Android 17, the update introduces a system-wide design refresh to some of the most distinctive Android handsets on the market.
The company detailed the update through its own community forum, confirming that the Open Beta opens at 11:00 BST, with the Phone (3) first in line to receive it. The general release is scheduled to begin in October.
What Nothing OS 5.0 Brings
Two of the more significant visual changes, the redesigned Launcher and the new Micrographics clock face, remain in development and will not feature in the beta. Users who prefer the current look will retain it, as the existing style is being offered alongside the new options.
The update introduces Geist as the new system typeface, along with redesigned Settings, custom status bar icons and a Camera change that pins QR results in place rather than making them track the code around the frame. A new home screen theme adds wallpaper-adaptive icon tints and transparent widgets, presented alongside the current style.
Two new lock screen clock faces, Gooey and Micrographics, arrive with colours that can be drawn from the wallpaper. The release also brings home screen batch editing. Everyday refinements include Bluetooth devices connecting from Quick Settings in a single tap and steadier QR results within the camera.
How Nothing Compares
The timing is notable, as Nothing is placing a finished Android 17 skin into beta in August and shipping it in October, which is rapid for a company of its size. Pixel owners have run stable Android 17 since the summer, benefiting from privacy indicators, Live Updates and Quick Share changes for months. Motorola offers a closer comparison, with stable builds expected late in the third or fourth quarter, and its mid-range Edge and Moto G lines waiting until late 2026 or early 2027.
Nothing OS has consistently been among the most highly rated aspects of these devices. The Phone (3) review awarded its software an 8.0 against a 7.2 price-class average, even as the handset scored 6.8 overall.
The announcement drew a divided response, with excitement about the update itself set against frustration from owners whose phones are not on the list. The Phone (2) prompted the sharpest criticism, with one commenter noting the device was still being sold new as the flagship two years ago. Another pointed out that the support window was publicly stated before purchase. The redesigned Launcher and the new Micrographics clock face will follow the initial beta once development is complete.
