Apple Maps ads have started appearing on iPhone, with the first sponsored listings arriving for users across the US and Canada after months of anticipation.
In March, Apple confirmed it would introduce advertising to Apple Maps as part of the broader Apple Business rollout. While an exact launch date was never specified, the company had earmarked a tentative window of Summer 2026. True to that schedule, sponsored placements are now surfacing within the app.
Where the ads appear
When you open Apple Maps on iPhone, ads show up in two main areas. The first is when you tap the search bar, before entering a specific query. The second is within the actual search results, where Apple has said sponsored listings will only appear when relevant to what you are looking for.
The rollout began within the past few days and is being introduced gradually across parts of the US and Canada. There is no confirmed timeline yet for wider availability in other regions.
A privacy-first advertising model
Apple has committed to a privacy-first advertising model, and the rules governing advertising on Apple Maps are notably stricter than those applied to rival mapping platforms.
Several advertising categories are prohibited outright. Banned categories include bail bonding services and cryptocurrency ATMs. Any home services ads are also barred from the platform. Medical services are not banned entirely, but each will be assessed on a case-by-case basis before being approved.
The measured approach reflects Apple’s wider positioning around user privacy, with the company applying tighter controls over which businesses can promote themselves and how sponsored content is presented to users.
The current rollout is limited to iPhone users in select parts of the US and Canada, expanding gradually rather than launching everywhere at once.
