The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered will launch on 29 September as a free upgrade for anyone who owns the game on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S consoles. Developer CD Projekt Red announced the news during Gamescom 2026’s Opening Night Live, the trailer showcase held in Cologne, Germany, that highlighted many of the titles arriving later this year and next.
The remaster of the 11-year-old role-playing game stole the show at the event. Alongside the updated release, the studio confirmed a new expansion called Songs of the Past for next year, positioned as the send-off for series protagonist Geralt of Rivia. The Witcher 4 is expected in 2028 and will focus on his adopted daughter and fellow Witcher, Ciri.
What the remaster adds
The Witcher 3 Remastered brings a range of improvements to the 2015 game. These include smoother combat, UI enhancements, a revamped skill tree, an expanded photo mode, new finishing moves and numerous graphical upgrades to textures, lighting, ray tracing and more. The remastered version will also debut on the Nintendo Switch 2 and Battle.net on the same day.
Beyond the free September upgrade, CD Projekt Red is making the game’s two expansions free from Tuesday. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine arrived in the year following the original release, adding new content including an extended story and a large new region.
Songs of the Past and the road to Witcher 4
The new expansion, Songs of the Past, is due in 2027 and will feature a new land for Geralt to explore. Letten is a region with its own identity, filled with questions, monsters and a dark secret. Players will fight never-before-seen enemies and use new weapons in what could be the last adventure for Geralt.
The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt is available now on multiple platforms, though the free upgrade will only be offered for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. Songs of the Past is currently slated for release only on PC and Xbox Series consoles, according to the game’s website, though this could change closer to launch.
