Fenix Flexin appears to have conceded that artificial intelligence played a role in creating his 1980s synth pop-themed track “Rubberz”. The Los Angeles rapper had spent weeks pushing back against such claims, but his latest remarks mark a notable shift in his public stance.
The admission came in a reply to an Instagram comment that referenced Tyga, who acknowledged relying on AI for his own contentious 1980s-influenced album $tarface. Responding, Fenix said he had never claimed to avoid AI entirely, arguing instead that it had nothing to do with the recording process. He added that he did not know what the app was until the track had been mixed and people began commenting, and defended the use of new technology as a tool.
A shift from earlier denials
The comment insists Fenix never denied using AI. However, last month on Hot 97’s Mornings With Mero, when asked directly about AI use by interviewer Kazeem Famuyide, he stated plainly that there was “no AI on it”.
Since “Rubberz” was released, Fenix has repeatedly gone out of his way to try to dispel the AI allegations in public, despite what he now says. He and his team posted what they described as clips of the recording session files, and appeared in comment sections to insist the song was made by two humans recording in his living room using Pro Tools, auto-tune and some reverb. He also maintained that he is actually singing in clips where it appears he is lip-syncing.
The role of Treblo
The rapper’s comments follow videos from producer Medasin claiming that an AI tool called Treblo (formerly known as Sonauto) was used to make the song. The company subsequently released an AI detector that identifies the track as having been created with Treblo AI.
The case reflects the growing tension around AI-generated music and how artists disclose the technology behind their releases. Detection tools that flag AI involvement have added a new layer of scrutiny, making it harder for creators to sidestep questions about how their tracks are produced.
Fenix’s most recent statement frames AI as a legitimate creative aid, urging others to keep up with the times or risk being left behind. The remark stands in direct contrast to his earlier, unambiguous denial that any AI featured on “Rubberz”.
