The iPhone Air 2 could arrive with one of the most unconventional camera layouts yet seen on an Apple handset, according to a fresh leak detailing the device’s rumoured design. The change stems from Apple’s attempt to fit a second rear camera into an exceptionally slim chassis.
Apple replaced the iPhone Plus models with the iPhone Air last year, but sales have remained modest. The muted response has been attributed to how much hardware the company removed in order to achieve the phone’s slender profile. To address this, the iPhone Air 2 is reported to feature two rear cameras rather than one.
An unusual camera placement
Because of the extreme space constraints inside the iPhone Air chassis, Apple may have to position the second camera wherever room allows. This raises the possibility that the additional lens could sit on the opposite side of the camera island, rather than beside the first camera. In the render accompanying the report, the flash is placed in the middle of the two cameras.
The original iPhone Air was built to be as slim and light as possible. To reach that goal, Apple shipped it with a single rear camera, a small battery and a modest speaker arrangement. The result was a strikingly thin device, but one that struggled to attract buyers given how little hardware it offered for the price.
What the iPhone Air 2 could offer
The iPhone Air features a 6.5-inch display with a 2736x1260px resolution, a single camera, a 3149 mAh battery, 12GB of memory and 256GB of storage. It is powered by the Apple A19 Pro chip and runs iOS 26.x.
Adding a second camera and a slightly larger battery to the iPhone Air 2 represents Apple’s effort to add more value to its ultra-slim line-up. Many buyers admired how the iPhone Air looked and felt but were deterred by how little it provided relative to its cost.
A second camera and a bigger battery could broaden the appeal of the iPhone Air 2. Should the rumoured design prove accurate, however, the reworked rear layout would mark a notable departure from the clean look that defined the first-generation model.
