The Exynos 2700 has reportedly outperformed Qualcomm’s next-generation flagship silicon in internal benchmarking, according to anonymous insiders. Samsung LSI’s testing was said to be comprehensive, spanning CPU, GPU, NPU and power efficiency measurements, with the chipset besting both variants of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6.
Qualcomm has officially confirmed that its next generation will feature two Elite chips, tentatively named the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. These sit separately from the non-Elite Gen 6 chip. Qualcomm has also confirmed a price increase for its chips.
Benchmark figures point to Exynos gains
On Geekbench 6.5 multi-core, the Exynos 2700 CPU reportedly scored 9.5% higher than the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro and 19% higher than the non-Pro model. The GPU results were less clearly attributed to a specific benchmark, but the Samsung chip was said to have posted a 5% higher score than Qualcomm’s Pro variant.
A second GPU test was conducted under a 2.5W power limit. In that scenario, the Exynos 2700 reportedly outscored its Snapdragon rivals by 22% against the Elite Pro and 24% against the Elite. On the AI side, using Llama 3.1 8B, the Exynos 2700 was said to produce answers 18% faster than the Snapdragon chip.
Power efficiency also featured prominently. In a simulation of real-world smartphone use, the Exynos 2700 drew 161mA of current compared with 185mA for the Elite Pro, suggesting Samsung has prioritised efficiency in its design.
Cost pressures favour in-house silicon
Although Samsung’s LSI (chipset design) and MX (smartphone design) divisions operate independently, MX can purchase flagship Exynos chips more cheaply than flagship Snapdragon chips. That price gap, widened further by Qualcomm’s confirmed increase, provides an incentive to use Exynos chips where possible.
Reported figures indicate that Exynos chips are used in 16% to 18% of Samsung phones, with spending on those chips varying considerably over the years. The current year’s spend reportedly has some way to go to match the previous year’s total, reflecting the savings Samsung achieves by fitting an Exynos chip in place of a Qualcomm one.
These conditions raise the likelihood of Exynos-powered Galaxy S27 models appearing in Korea, Europe and possibly other regions, particularly if the benchmark results hold up. Samsung is also said to have five new foldables planned, though which of them might adopt Exynos remains unclear.
The Exynos 2700 will reportedly be produced on the SF2P node, Samsung’s second-generation 2nm Gate-All-Around process. A strong-performing smartphone chip serves as an advertisement for Samsung’s foundry business, potentially attracting companies seeking a semiconductor fab.
