Google has introduced a new password manager switching experience on Android that removes the need to download CSV files when migrating to a new app. The tool allows users to move all of their passwords, and even passkeys, between apps seamlessly.
How the new switching system works
To use the feature, users first open their new password manager app and choose to import or copy passwords from the old manager app. Android then detects the manager apps installed on the device and coordinates the transfer between both apps. Users can review the information being transferred and approve it in a few taps.
Because the method also supports passkey transfer, users will not need to set them up again when moving to a new password manager app. According to Google, this approach also avoids the risk of exposing data from a CSV file, which has traditionally been part of the migration process.
Supported apps and availability
The new experience is already available across select partners as well as within Google’s own password manager app. Bitwarden, 1Password, and Dashlane are currently supported, with more apps expected to follow in the future.
The password manager switching feature will be available on all devices running Android 8 or above.
