Gemini Notebook, Google’s AI note-taking app, can now draw information from the books you have purchased. A new feature called Expert Intelligence allows you to bring titles from Google Play Books directly into the app, enabling you to ask questions about the material and generate plans, infographics, AI podcasts and more based on their contents.
The tool can turn a book’s contents into practical output. In one demonstration, it was used to generate a recipe book from the information in Michael Pollan’s Food Rules. In another, it applied the knowledge from Kim Scott’s management-focused Radical Candor to answer a question about handling a difficult conversation with an employee. Users can also view the full text of a book directly within Notebook.
How Expert Intelligence works
At launch, more than 100,000 books from publishers including Penguin Random House, Johns Hopkins University Press, Macmillan Publishers and O’Reilly Media will support Expert Intelligence. Google also worked with 15 authors, among them Pollan, Scott, Steven Pinker and Jennifer Wallace, to create “Featured Notebooks”. Each author customises these with additional source material, introductory letters and more.
Titles that support the feature will display “Gemini Notebook” under the “Tools” badge in Google Play Books, making them easy to identify. The intention is to let people assemble a collection of experts whose work they value, effectively building a personal set of advisers available wherever they go.
Purchase protections for authors
Google has built safeguards into Gemini Notebook to prevent users from accessing material from books they have not bought. If you share a Notebook that includes a purchased book, a user who does not own the title will see it listed as a source, but they will not be able to view the full text or any related information. Clicking the source directs them to Google Play Books, where they can buy it.
The approach is designed to create new revenue possibilities for authors and publishers, allowing users to bring relevant knowledge and expertise into the app while respecting ownership of the underlying material.
Wider rollout planned
Google will eventually bring the feature to AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app, both of which can already pull information from Gemini Notebook. The company also plans to expand Expert Intelligence to support scholarly articles, magazine articles and newspapers.
