YouTube has confirmed that a bug affecting the popular Watch later playlist has been fixed, bringing relief to users who rely on the feature to store videos they intend to view at a later time. The issue, which surfaced last month, prevented many people from accessing content they had saved.
For some users, the entire Watch later playlist vanished, replaced by a page reading “No results found.” Others discovered that only a portion of their saved videos had gone missing. One user reported having 1,100 videos saved and being able to see them all on the YouTube website via a computer, yet only 50 were visible in the YouTube mobile app.
What Google said about the fix
The resolution was announced on the YouTube forum, with Google stating that users “should once again see all of your videos displaying correctly in your playlists, including Watch later on the YouTube app.” Google did not provide an explanation for what caused the problem in the first place.
How to save and view videos in Watch later
The Watch later category is included automatically with the YouTube mobile app on both Android and iOS. If you spot a video in your feed or in search results and have not begun playing it, tap the three-dot icon next to the video title and select “Save to Watch later.” If you have already started watching a video and wish to continue later, tap the Save button in the action bar beneath the title, then tick the box for Watch later.
To view a saved video, open the YouTube app, tap your Profile icon and look under the Library heading for Watch later. Selecting the listing displays the titles you have saved, and pressing one begins playback.
The YouTube app comes preinstalled on most certified Android devices but not on Apple hardware. It can be installed on an iPhone from the App Store and on Android devices from the Google Play Store.
Google announced the purchase of YouTube on 9 October 2006 for EUR 1 billion in Google stock, with the acquisition closing on 13 November of the same year. The platform was bought from its co-founders Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim.
