The Disney D23 fan convention is under way in Anaheim, where the entertainment company staged a star-studded showcase to unveil its upcoming films and streaming series, alongside trailers and previews of already announced titles. Beyond Frozen 3, The Incredibles 3, the Marvel reveals and the latest Star Wars news, Friday night delivered several notable announcements across film and television.
A short teaser was finally shown for the feature film based on the beloved Australian children’s series Bluey. The brief clip presented 3D-animated versions of Bluey and her sister Bingo playing their keepy uppy game, bouncing a balloon between them until it fell onto the grass and the pair ran out of view. The Bluey movie is scheduled for release in August 2027. Creator Joe Brumm will step down from his role following the film’s launch, meaning the first three seasons and minisodes on Disney Plus remain the available material until then.
Pixar and Animated Sequels Take Centre Stage
It proved a significant day for third instalments, as Zootopia 3 arrived as a surprise announcement, less than a year after the release of Zootopia 2. Birds will feature as a new addition, with a teaser showing a feather drifting on the breeze through the animal-inhabited metropolis. Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps and Ke Huy Quan as Gary De’Snake are confirmed to be returning.
A sequel to the hugely popular 2017 Pixar film Coco was also revealed. In Coco 2, main character Miguel is now a teenager, still playing music and still contending with the former hero-turned-villain Ernesto de la Cruz. Coco 2 reaches cinemas in November 2029.
The Coco announcement led into a trailer and release date for the fourth Kingdom Hearts game, arriving in late 2027, with Miguel’s world set to join the franchise. A Kingdom Hearts animated series is also coming to Disney Plus “soon”.
Live-Action Tangled and Percy Jackson Updates
A brief teaser for the live-action version of Tangled introduced Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel, all in full costume. Hahn appeared on stage to introduce a video in which Manheim and Croft detailed filming locations across Spain, including monasteries and cathedrals. Tangled will be released on 31 March 2028.
Ahead of its 20 November launch, Percy Jackson and the Olympians received a fresh trailer. Walker Scobell, who plays Percy Jackson, was joined on stage by Ming-Na Wen, who portrays Hera, for the third-season reveal.
