A Samsung Galaxy S26 has reportedly exploded in the pocket of its owner in Greater Noida, India, leaving him with severe burn injuries. The incident is a stark reminder that, while modern smartphones are generally considered safe, failures can still occur.

According to accounts of the event, a young man named Majid sustained serious burns and was taken to hospital after his phone caught fire while stored in his trouser pocket. He was reportedly travelling from Ghaziabad to Dankaur when the device suddenly burst into flames.

What Happened During the Incident

The phone had been purchased roughly a month earlier from a local retailer based at Grand Venice Mall. It had functioned normally up until the moment of the incident. Majid stated that the device heated up rapidly before igniting, with burning fragments scattering and setting some of his clothing alight.

He suffered severe burns to both hands as he attempted to remove the burning phone from his trousers, along with injuries to his lower body. Videos circulating online show him receiving medical attention and recovering in a hospital bed.

The exact model has not been officially confirmed, though the remains resemble a Galaxy S26. Photographs suggest the point of failure was the battery, which appears completely destroyed and had melted part of the phone’s rear glass panel.

The Battery as the Likely Cause

The incident recalls the earlier Galaxy Note 7 episode, when Samsung permanently discontinued the model and recalled roughly 2.5 million units after manufacturing defects in the lithium-ion batteries caused numerous devices to overheat, catch fire, and explode.

Lithium-ion batteries are vulnerable to a process known as thermal runaway, which can be triggered by an internal short circuit, physical damage, or exposure to extreme heat. This effect is essentially a cascading release of the battery’s stored energy in the form of heat, and it is extremely difficult to bring under control once it begins.

In this case, the battery is almost certainly the source of the failure. It remains unclear whether the explosion was linked to mishandling, physical damage, or another factor. The device was purchased around one month before the incident and had operated without issue until it caught fire.
