Apple Music to Make AI Disclosure Labels Mandatory in 2026

Apple Music will make AI disclosure labels mandatory later in 2026, requiring labels and distributors to flag artificial intelligence content in the app.

Apple Music is set to make its AI disclosure labels compulsory, requiring record labels and distributors to identify artificial intelligence content within the app later in 2026. The move builds on a system that has, until now, remained entirely voluntary.

The change means that AI-generated material within the Apple Music app should become easier than ever to identify, as those delivering the content will be obliged to declare when it has been produced with the help of artificial intelligence.

From Optional to Mandatory

In March 2026, Apple introduced Transparency Tags for Apple Music. These optional disclosure labels were designed to indicate that specific content had been “materially generated” with the assistance of artificial intelligence.

At launch, the tags placed the responsibility on distributors to voluntarily flag their material. Apple stated that it believed distributors should “take an active role in reporting when the content they deliver is created using AI”, describing the tags as “the first concrete step” in the process.

What the Requirement Means for Distributors

Until now, Apple has not compelled labels or distributors to identify AI-generated content, leaving the decision to each party. That approach is due to shift later in 2026, when the AI disclosure tags will become a mandatory part of the delivery process rather than an optional feature.

Under the updated policy, record labels and distributors supplying music to the platform will be required to label content that has been materially generated using AI. The requirement applies to material delivered through the Apple Music app, giving listeners a clearer indication of how a given track was produced.

The forthcoming rules extend the framework that Apple established earlier in the year, converting the existing voluntary tagging system into a formal obligation for those supplying content to the service later in 2026.
