A YouTube bug is affecting the app primarily on Apple’s iPad, causing key information about a video to vanish after it has been viewed in full-screen mode. Users watching a clip in full-screen may find that once they exit, the title, description, and comment section all disappear from the interface.
Google has acknowledged the fault. A post from the company in the YouTube Help community forum confirmed that details of a video you have just watched in full-screen on an iPad are disappearing after leaving that mode. The company indicated the problem is seen mostly on iPad models, wording that does not entirely rule out its appearance on other devices.
How the iPad glitch behaves
Affected users report that the missing data reappears once the YouTube app is closed and reopened. Another workaround emerged from users who found that rotating the iPad from landscape to portrait orientation, with screen lock disabled, brought back the video title, description, and comment section. Turning the tablet back to landscape caused the information to disappear again.
Judging by the responses to Google’s post, iPad owners have been dealing with the issue for several days, with one user reporting it had lasted a week and a half. Some had initially attributed the fault to Apple and their iPads before it emerged that the problem lies with Google’s software.
YouTube’s reach and history on Apple devices
Google has stated that it is actively investigating the bug. The platform remains one of the most widely used services in the world, with 2.7 billion monthly active users globally. In the United States, that figure ranges between 238 million and 259 million monthly users.
YouTube has a long history on Apple hardware. It first appeared on a mobile device in 2007 with the launch of the original iPhone, where it was a built-in application. When Apple released iOS 6 in the autumn of 2012, it moved the YouTube app to the App Store, allowing iPhone users to decide whether to install it. Since then, YouTube has expanded its library to include original shows, live and recorded news and sports, and content from creators across a broad range of categories.
Google has not indicated a timeline for a fix, but has confirmed the investigation into the display issue is ongoing.
