The Fairphone 6 Plus has arrived in the US, marking the first time the Dutch manufacturer has sold its devices directly in the country. The company markets its handsets as modular, easy to repair and more sustainable than rival products.
Running Android 16, the Fairphone 6 Plus works on AT&T and T-Mobile networks and is priced at around £515 through the company’s website and on Amazon. Buyers can choose from three finishes: cobalt blue, horizon black and forest green.
What the Fairphone 6 Plus offers
The 6 Plus represents a modest hardware upgrade over the original 6 model released last year. It is powered by a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 chip and 12GB of RAM, an increase from the previous 8GB. It retains the same 6.31-inch OLED display, 50MP main camera and 256GB of storage.
The central appeal of Fairphone’s devices lies in their repairability and sustainable construction. A screwdriver can be used to swap out 12 parts of the phone, including the display, battery, cameras and SIM tray. The handset comes with a five-year warranty, and its Android software is supported until 2033. On sustainability, Fairphone states that it is 100% e-waste neutral and that its phones are built with 50% recycled or fair factory-made materials.
Why repairability matters
Flagship smartphones from leading makers such as Apple and Samsung are typically difficult, if not impossible, for most consumers to repair, and attempting to do so can void product warranties. Independent repair shops and manufacturer repair services can address problems such as failing batteries or broken screens, but such fixes can prove costly.
There is also an environmental dimension. The ability to repair a device can extend its lifecycle, one of the reasons consumer advocates have campaigned for right-to-repair laws across all 50 US states. Gay Gordon-Byrne, executive director of The Repair Association, welcomed the news that the 6 Plus would be available in the US, anticipating considerable consumer interest along with interest in teardowns and evaluations.
A year ago, the teardown site iFixit awarded the Fairphone 6 its highest repairability rating of 10 out of 10.
