Xfinity Shield is a new home-security platform from Comcast that taps into home Wi-Fi in fresh ways. Announced on Monday, the service introduces a feature called WiFi Motion, which uses compatible Xfinity Wi-Fi routers to detect movement inside the home without cameras or dedicated motion sensors.
WiFi Motion and other Shield features are available at no additional cost to eligible Xfinity customers, though compatible equipment and other requirements apply. The platform is designed to expand the role of the router, moving beyond connectivity towards active home protection.
How WiFi Motion Detects Movement
Rather than relying on traditional sensors or video, the technology uses algorithms to monitor changes in Wi-Fi frequencies and identify small patterns of interference, such as those created when a person enters a room. This presence-sensing technology can detect people without cameras or video, helping to preserve privacy while still sending alerts through the Xfinity app when unexpected human movement is noticed.
The feature requires an Xfinity Gateway device, plus at least one connected Wi-Fi device on the Xfinity platform. Similar approaches have previously appeared in standalone sensors, smart light bulb kits and systems used for aging-in-place arrangements in care settings.
WiFi Motion does not need to remain on continuously. Xfinity Shield includes several security modes that enable or disable features based on activity. Home Watch, Away Watch and Dark Watch each offer different approaches to alerts and system arming depending on whether occupants are at home, out at work or school, or asleep.
Additional Features and Paid Plans
Comcast is also folding other security tools into Xfinity Shield. Its firewalls and router cybersecurity now sit under the platform, alongside parental controls and related app alerts.
For customers wanting to expand their setup, a Shield Select plan is available starting at around £12 per month. This adds one wireless security camera and sensor, plus video cloud storage and a 24/7 emergency contact option. Comcast describes the camera as AI-powered, with recognition features covering people, packages, vehicles and pets.

That’s the vision behind Shield: advancing the role of Wi-Fi to both connect and protect the home.”
The free version of Xfinity Shield offers a notable option for current users who prefer not to install security cameras. The Shield Select plan begins at approximately £12 per month.
