Tim Cook will step down as Apple CEO on 1 September 2026, telling others that they will define his legacy while sharing that he hopes to be remembered as a “good and decent man”.

John Ternus will take over as Apple’s chief executive from that date, with Cook moving into the role of Executive Chairman. Cook has indicated that he does not intend to shape the conversation around his own tenure, preferring to let others assess his years at the helm.

Cook Reflects on His Legacy

Speaking in a recent interview, Cook made clear that he will not attempt to define his own legacy. He noted that his record will be examined and debated for decades to come, but that he will not be entering that discussion himself. His stated wish is simply to be viewed as a “good and decent man”.

Although Cook will no longer appear during Apple keynotes, he is expected to remain a familiar presence at select press events for some time. He will continue to serve the company in a distinct capacity, acting as a special government liaison for Apple.

A Clear Financial Record

While debate will inevitably surround Cook and his time leading the company, his financial track record is well documented. During his final earnings call as chief executive, Apple reported quarterly earnings of EUR 94 billion (around £86 billion). That single quarter surpassed the total the company earned across the entire first year of Cook’s tenure as CEO.

The transition marks a significant moment for the company, with John Ternus stepping into leadership as Cook assumes his new position on 1 September.
