T-Mobile device credits appear to have been withdrawn from several subscribers before the end of their financing terms, leaving affected customers facing unexpected charges on their monthly bills.
When a phone is financed over 24 months, a customer cannot simply stop paying after 22 months. Yet one T-Mobile subscriber found that the situation worked the other way round, discovering that the carrier had pulled his monthly device credits after 22 months. The result was an extra £63 per month for the final two months of the agreement.
Shifting explanations from the carrier
Posting on Reddit under the username HumbleFisherman5391, the subscriber said no consistent reason was ever given for the credits being stopped. T-Mobile initially claimed the credits had ended because the customer had changed plans, something that had not happened.
The carrier then offered a different account, stating that a system audit had found the customer was not eligible for the credits. Having already awarded them for 22 months, that explanation did not add up. T-Mobile eventually concluded that the promotion used by the subscriber was not compatible with the Go5G Plus plan he was on, though no clear technical reason was ever provided.
Options and resolution
The customer faced a choice between challenging the decision, paying the additional £126 (roughly £63 a month for two months), or returning the phone. Having already used around £1,390 in device credits, handing back the handset over about £126 in revoked credits was not a sensible move.
T-Mobile then offered cash to settle the matter. The company first proposed around £16, which the subscriber rejected, before raising the offer to about £63, which was also turned down. The customer said he kept pushing because the remaining credits were worth roughly £126 and the situation was not caused by anything he had done. After the issue was escalated, T-Mobile agreed to pay the full £126 to cover the two months of missing credits.
What subscribers should check
Other customers have reported comparable experiences. A Reddit user posting under the name Inevitable-Breath704 said his monthly device credits stopped abruptly about halfway through the 24-month financing term, forcing him to dispute the matter with T-Mobile.
Subscribers are advised to review their monthly statements to confirm that their device credits are still being applied. Any unexplained increase in the amount charged each month should be examined closely, particularly during an active financing agreement.
