The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 stands out as one of the most capable foldable phones available, following an extended three-week trial. In practice, the book-style design promises the best of both worlds: a conventional handset when closed and a compact tablet when opened.
Switching to the Fold 8 from a compact iPhone 17 Pro made the appeal clear from the outset. Yet the experience raised a broader question about whether a foldable form factor suits everyday use.
Everyday tasks rarely need a bigger screen
Much of what people do on a phone involves quick, simple interactions: replying to a message, running a search, checking notifications or taking pictures. These tasks favour speed and convenience, and a larger display offers little benefit. Having to unfold the device for such actions can become an inconvenience rather than an advantage.
Social media does not deliver an obvious win either. Apps such as Instagram and TikTok still struggle with the Fold 8’s shorter proportions, producing black bars, cropping or interface elements awkwardly positioned over a post. The immersive screen can also prove distracting, keeping users engaged for longer than intended.
Reading and gaming show the Fold 8 at its best
The larger display comes into its own during certain activities. Unfolding the device to read a newsletter or a longer article feels transformative, and photos look excellent on the main screen. The result is comparable to using a small tablet without carrying a separate device.
Gaming is even more persuasive. The bigger panel makes a noticeable difference and repeatedly encourages longer sessions.
Positioning as a productivity device
Presenting the Fold as a productivity tool appears misguided. While a keyboard and mouse can be connected to create a small workstation, a laptop remains the preferable choice for serious work. The Fold 8 sits in the in-between space between a phone and a computer, effectively the tablet niche.
That larger screen occasionally helps with desktop-style interfaces, such as accessing an internal system to amend an article. It can save a user from reaching for a laptop, but only on rare occasions. After three weeks, the Fold 8 remains the most accomplished foldable tested to date.
