OpenAI has confirmed the departure of Brad Lightcap, the company’s special projects lead and former chief operating officer, ending an eight-year run at the AI lab. In an internal memo later shared on X, Lightcap told colleagues that he would be starting “something new” and said he would remain with the company for the next few weeks.
“Over the last few months, I’ve been focused on the next horizon and what would stand in the way of mission success,” Lightcap wrote. “I believe there are a few important new things the world will need to get right as we enter this next period.” He added that he was excited to help advance the mission “from a different vantage point.”
A shifting role at OpenAI
Lightcap’s remit had changed considerably over the past 18 months. In March 2025, his position as COO expanded to include oversight of the company’s business and day-to-day operations, global deployment, business strategy, key partnerships, infrastructure and operational excellence. In January 2026, he stepped back from leading the company’s enterprise push on the product and engineering side while retaining responsibility for commercial functions.
Barret Zoph took over enterprise before departing roughly five months later. In April, Lightcap officially left the COO role, moving into a new position leading the team’s special projects and reporting directly to OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman. Denise Dresser, the company’s chief revenue officer, assumed a significant portion of his former responsibilities.
A run of executive changes
Lightcap’s exit is not the only high-profile departure from OpenAI’s leadership in recent months. The company’s AGI chief, Fidji Simo, officially left her role in July following a period of medical leave, while chief marketing officer Kate Rouch stepped down in April, citing health reasons.
The moves come amid substantial reorganisation across the business and its C-suite. Company president Greg Brockman has taken control of the product side, and OpenAI has pledged to cut out “side quests” in favour of key revenue drivers as it prepares to go public over the coming year.
“It always amazes me how quickly the world has adopted our tools and rallied behind our mission,” Lightcap wrote. “I hope we will continue to earn their trust.” He said he would stay on for the next few weeks before beginning his next venture.
