iOS 27 introduces a subtle new feature that ensures you never miss a friend’s special day while using the Phone app. When you are on a call with a contact whose birthday falls on that day, your iPhone will display fireworks to mark the occasion. The reminder to buy a gift, however, remains firmly your responsibility.
Whether you remember to ring them yourself, or they call you first, iOS 27 makes certain you are aware that it is their birthday. It is arguably one of the smallest additions to the operating system, yet the birthday reminder in the Phone app is a welcome touch.
How the Birthday Reminder Works
In the current betas, when you place a call to someone, the Phone app checks the contact card you have saved for that person. It performs exactly the same check when they call you, as this has always been the mechanism the app uses to display a caller’s name and, where available, a contact photo.
The difference in iOS 27 is that the app now does one additional thing. If the contact card shows that the day of the call is that person’s birthday, the celebratory fireworks appear on screen during the call.
A Small but Considered Update
The feature relies entirely on the birthday information stored in your contacts, so it works only for people whose birthdays you have added to their contact cards. There is no separate setup beyond having that detail in place.
The birthday reminder is currently available in the iOS 27 betas, appearing automatically for both outgoing and incoming calls when the date matches a stored birthday.
