The ceramic Apple Watch could make a comeback after a seven-year absence, with the premium material reportedly set to return to the line-up. While the overall design of the device is not expected to change, this favoured and costly finish may once again become an option for buyers.
A material with history
It has been nine years since the Apple Watch Series 2 first introduced ceramic to the range. Over the following years, Apple offered the material in a white finish, later expanding to both white and black ceramic options. The company then removed the material from its line-up entirely in 2020.
The ceramic finish was regarded as a distinctive, high-end alternative to the standard aluminium and stainless steel cases, and its departure left a gap at the premium end of the Apple Watch range.
When the ceramic option could return
Apple is said to be working on bringing ceramic back to the Apple Watch as soon as 2026. According to reporting from Mark Gurman, the company is planning the return of the ceramic case option for either the end of 2026 or into 2027.
No change to the wider design of the Apple Watch has been indicated alongside the potential return of the material. The reported plans point to the ceramic finish being reintroduced as an additional case choice rather than as part of a broader redesign, marking the first time the material would feature on the device since 2020.
