Apple CarPlay is emerging as a deciding factor for buyers weighing up two almost identical electric vehicles, with the model that retains the feature reportedly outselling its Chevrolet counterpart by an increasingly wide margin.
The situation places General Motors and its recent decision to drop the smartphone-mirroring technology under direct scrutiny. Where two comparable vehicles are available, the presence of CarPlay appears to be shaping purchasing behaviour, leaving the version without it trailing in sales.
GM’s Move Away From CarPlay
In 2023, General Motors announced that it would not include CarPlay in its electric vehicles going forward. The decision prompted notable public backlash, as many drivers had come to rely on the interface for navigation, calls and media.
The position hardened further in 2025, when GM chief executive Mary Barra announced that the company would remove both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from all its vehicles. In their place, GM opted to develop an in-house infotainment system built on Android Automotive OS.
Sales Under The Spotlight
That strategy is now being tested in the marketplace. With a near-identical CarPlay-equipped model available, the Chevrolet variant lacking the feature is being outsold by a widening margin, highlighting how central smartphone integration has become to the buying decision.
The contrast underlines the challenge GM faces in persuading customers to adopt its proprietary system over the familiar experience offered by CarPlay and Android Auto. As the comparison plays out across showrooms, the infotainment choice is proving to be more than a minor specification detail, instead acting as a genuine differentiator between otherwise comparable electric cars.
GM’s plan applies across its vehicle range, meaning the shift extends beyond a single model line and reflects a broader corporate direction. The company continues to build its offering around Android Automotive OS rather than reintroducing the mirroring platforms it has chosen to leave behind.
