Verizon has been hit by another network outage, with many of the carrier’s subscribers unable to make or receive calls across parts of the United States.
The disruption first became apparent as calls dropped and could not be reconnected. Reports to Downdetector initially showed no issue, before the number of complaints from Verizon subscribers surged to 10,820, up from 44 just an hour and a half earlier.
What subscribers are experiencing
The bulk of the problems centred on cellular connectivity. Around 80% of complaints came from customers reporting a loss of mobile service on their phones, while 10% related to the 5G Home Internet service going down. A further 6% flagged an inability to connect to the mobile internet via Verizon.
Affected users reported that although voice calls were not working, texting and data remained available in some cases. Verizon customers who see the SOS icon on their iPhone, or find they cannot make or take calls, are experiencing symptoms of the outage.
Where the outage was reported
Complaints to Downdetector came from a number of major cities, including New York City, Chicago, Minneapolis, Charlotte, Brooklyn, Houston, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Virginia Beach. Subscribers in states such as Connecticut and Massachusetts also reported being unable to make or receive calls.
In a statement, Verizon said: “We are aware of an issue impacting voice services for wireless customers in some parts of the U.S. Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to identify and resolve the issue. Please visit our Check Network Status page for updates on service in your area. We know how much people rely on Verizon and apologize for any inconvenience. We appreciate your patience.”
The company directed affected customers to its Check Network Status page for updates specific to their area. This latest disruption follows a major outage in January during which Verizon customers were left without wireless service for 10 hours.
