Whether an ‘Elite’ chip genuinely makes a difference is a question worth examining, as Qualcomm continues to push mobile processing forward by introducing custom Oryon cores in its smartphone processors. Those generational improvements now stretch across Qualcomm’s chip portfolio, reaching even processors that don’t carry the “Elite” branding.
That development makes it harder to compare performance across smartphone models and chip generations. Motorola’s new Razr Ultra 2026, for example, is powered by the last-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. The Razr Fold, meanwhile, runs on the newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 platform, albeit the non-Elite version.
To find out whether an older Elite chip or a newer “base” chip delivered better performance, both handsets were run through a six-test benchmark gauntlet. The results were not entirely as expected.
How the Razr flagships were tested
The Motorola Razr Ultra 2026 and Motorola Razr Fold were each put through six tests, with every one designed to measure a specific aspect of device performance. CPU performance, which affects how snappy a device feels when opening apps and during everyday use, was assessed using both Geekbench 6 and Geekbench 7. On-device AI capability was measured with Geekbench AI and its TensorFlow Lite framework. Gaming and graphics performance was gauged with 3DMark’s Wild Life Extreme benchmark and stress test.
Each benchmark was run three times, with the next run starting immediately after the previous one finished. This produces a cleaner average that is more representative of real-world performance than a single run, while running the trials in quick succession offers insight into how the two phones cope with sustained loads and whether they experience major thermal throttling.
After completing three runs of each benchmark, the phones were allowed to cool down before the next test began, ensuring the strain of previous tests did not influence the current results.
CPU and AI benchmark performance
The Snapdragon 8 Elite chip inside the Razr Ultra 2026 features two prime CPU cores clocked up to 4.32GHz, plus six performance CPU cores reaching 3.53GHz. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip inside the Razr Fold is built on newer Oryon Gen 3 prime CPU cores, though these are clocked at only up to 3.8GHz, with six performance cores hitting up to 3.32GHz.
In short, the older Elite chip offers higher clock speeds, while the base Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip carries newer prime cores. As both chips share the same number of prime and performance CPU cores, the results were expected to fall within a similar range.
In the Geekbench 6 CPU benchmark, the Razr Fold averaged 2,593 single-core and 8,559 multi-core across three runs, with individual results of 2,612/8,809, 2,596/8,480 and 2,572/8,388. The Razr Ultra 2026 averaged 2,791 single-core and 8,268 multi-core, recording 2,830/8,372, 2,782/8,261 and 2,762/8,
