The Redmi 17 5G and Redmi 17 4G have gone official, expanding Xiaomi’s line-up following last year’s Redmi 15 series. The two handsets share identical looks and much of their core hardware, with the primary differences found in their processors and storage speeds.
Both models are built around a 6.9-inch IPS LCD panel. Unlike their predecessors, the new devices adopt a 1600 x 720px resolution rather than the FHD screens seen previously. Each display supports a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and animations.
Battery, charging and shared features
The two phones carry the same sizeable 7,500mAh battery, paired with 45W wired charging and 22.5W reverse wired charging. Additional common features include IP64 ingress protection, NFC, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Photography is handled by a 50MP main camera on the rear and an 8MP selfie module up front on both models. A notable touch is the programmable RGB light on the back, which can display incoming notifications as well as system status alerts.
Chipsets, memory and storage
The key distinction lies under the bonnet. The Redmi 17 4G is powered by a MediaTek Helio G91-Ultra, while the Redmi 17 5G uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 5. Both handsets offer 4GB or 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM alongside 128GB or 256GB storage options.
Storage performance also separates the pair. The 4G variant relies on slower eMMC 5.1 storage, whereas the 5G model steps up to faster UFS 2.2 speeds, giving it an edge in read and write performance.
Colours and pricing
The Redmi 17 4G is offered in Black, Deep Blue, Lotus Purple and Oak Green. In Malaysia it starts at MYR 669, which converts to roughly £120.
The Redmi 17 5G comes in Black, Deep Blue and Vivid Orange. Pricing in Malaysia begins at MYR 769, equating to approximately £140. Both devices retain the same design language, differing chiefly in their internal components and available finishes.
