Overwatch welcomes a new tank hero when Season 4 begins on 11 August. The chapter introduces D.Mon, a mech pilot from the same South Korean Meka Squad as launch hero D.Va, but she brings a distinct style of play to the hero shooter’s tank roster.
Yuna “D.Mon” Lee arrives as the first new tank hero since Domina in February. The character has featured in the game’s lore since 2018, when she appeared in D.Va’s Shooting Star cinematic, and players have called for more mech heroes since then.
A new leader for the Meka Squad
D.Mon steps into the role as the new leader of South Korea’s Meka Squad. Narrative designer Eleni Rivera described her as an “untouchable, cool ice queen,” a contrast to the team’s former leader in the lore, who was louder and more forthright. Where D.Va was a more individualistic leader who did her own thing, D.Mon is presented as a collected team player.
Lead Hero Producer Kenny Hudson said the hero’s story reflected “great attention to detail, and pride in the craft,” noting that the development team had held high expectations for the character for years, much like the wider community.
D.Mon design and gameplay
While D.Va fulfilled a ballistics-based mech fantasy, D.Mon brings agile, science-fiction sword and shield gameplay. Referencing the popularity of the hammer-wielding tank Reinhardt, Hudson said the team wanted to expand the melee tank roster and give players who enjoy close-quarters tanks more to choose from.
D.Mon’s primary fire swings a plasma sword in an arc in front of her, while her secondary fire raises a shield. With the shield up, activating primary fire lunges her forward with the sword, dealing damage and knocking back enemies. She also has a Fusion Repeater ability granting a few seconds of ranged damage, along with a resource-based horizontal dash that boosts her quickly along the ground. The Fusion Repeater allows her to deal early damage or finish off low-health enemies as they flee.
Hudson said the design was partly inspired by a desire to explore a melee tank with greater mobility. As a result, D.Mon can dash while holding her shield, giving her a different feel from other melee tanks, which generally lack movement abilities.
Ultimate ability and mech mechanics
Her ultimate ability, called Limit Break, charges the plasma sword before swinging it through a wide arc. The move grants D.Mon overhealth, and enemies caught by it take damage while briefly receiving increased damage from other attacks.
Like D.Va, D.Mon switches to pilot form if her mech is destroyed and can build up ultimate charge to call down a new one. When she does, nearby enemies take damage and are knocked back.
Hudson said internal playtests showed D.Mon is effective at taking space and works well in rush compositions featuring speed boosts from supports such as Lúcio or Juno. Her ultimate also pairs well with other damage hero ultimates, thanks to the increased damage it applies.
