OpenAI Dots Agent: Enterprise AI That Orders Dinner Too
OpenAI Dots is a new AI agent platform blending enterprise software with everyday tasks, featuring customisable avatars and a split-window interface.

OpenAI Dots is the company’s new agent platform, blending workplace software with the ability to carry out everyday tasks such as ordering food. Announced earlier this week, the platform introduces anthropomorphic, blobby avatars that users can customise, positioning it as a practical assistant aimed firmly at professional use.

While the design echoes the approachable feel of rival Meta Muse, Dots leans more towards the experience of using business tools that also happen to be able to fetch you a burrito. The emphasis is on work, even as the agent handles lighter, consumer-style requests.

How Dots Works

Each Dot comes with a customisable name and a cartoon-like avatar. At present, users are limited to a single Dot, though OpenAI says that support for multiple Dots is planned for the future. The platform’s interface mirrors that of Muse, with a split layout: one window is used to chat directly with the agent, while a separate window lets users follow along as the agent carries out its tasks.

This dual-pane approach gives users visibility into the agent’s actions in real time, allowing them to monitor progress as requests are processed. The design reflects an effort to combine conversational interaction with transparent task execution.

Positioning Against Rivals

The arrival of Dots places OpenAI in direct competition with other consumer-facing AI agents that have emerged recently. Where some rivals prioritise an ultra-approachable, playful feel, Dots is characterised more by its workplace sensibility, suggesting OpenAI is targeting users who want an assistant capable of handling both professional and personal tasks within the same environment.

The customisable avatars and naming options add a degree of personality to what is otherwise a productivity-focused tool. The combination of friendly design and enterprise functionality marks OpenAI’s latest attempt to broaden the appeal of its agent technology.

At launch, Dots offers a single agent per user, with multi-agent support identified as a feature set to arrive in a later update.
