Microsoft Copilot will no longer display its emotive yellow blob, Mico, when using the chatbot’s voice mode. In a support page, Microsoft confirmed that the avatar is being moved to its Learn Live platform, where it will have “more to react to”.
Mico first appeared in Copilot’s voice mode in October, positioned by Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman as a means of giving the chatbot an “identity”. The blob was designed to respond to spoken input in real time, complete with facial expressions and animations.
Why Mico Is Being Moved
The relocation to Learn Live gives the avatar a more suitable home, with Microsoft stating the platform offers the character greater opportunity to react to interactions. The change means Copilot’s voice mode will now operate without the animated visual presence that defined the feature at launch.
The decision marks a notable shift in how Microsoft presents its conversational assistant. Rather than serving as the visible face of Copilot, Mico will now be tied to a learning-focused environment where its reactive animations can be applied to educational content.
A Familiar Pattern For Microsoft Helpers
Mico now joins a lengthy list of virtual helpers that Microsoft has retired over the years. These include Clippy, the Office assistant that became a cultural reference point, alongside Cortana and Rover.
Each of these characters was introduced to add personality and guidance to Microsoft products before eventually being phased out. Mico’s departure from Copilot’s voice mode follows the same trajectory, moving the avatar away from its original role less than a year after it debuted.
Mico is headed to Learn Live, where its emotive design and animated reactions will continue to feature.
