The iPhone Ultra could arrive with one of the most unusual selfie camera arrangements seen on a smartphone. Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to be unveiled early next month, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, and fresh leaks point to an unconventional placement for two of its cameras.
As the most unusual iPhone yet, the device may position both of its selfie cameras in the corners of its displays, rather than following the more familiar central layout used across the industry.
Selfie cameras pushed to the corners
The foldable device is expected to feature a selfie camera on each of its two displays, in addition to a dual camera on the rear. What stands out is that the camera on the outer display may sit on the top-right side of the phone. This detail emerged from a leaked third-party screen protector featuring a circular opening for the camera.
Earlier leaks showed the internal display with the selfie camera positioned on the top-left side. If both sets of information prove accurate, the two selfie cameras could end up in the same corner of the device, placed at a slight offset so their modules occupy space in only one part of the phone.
Caution is warranted, however. Accessory makers typically base their designs on leaked CAD files, which are frequently inaccurate. The same leaked dummies that placed the inner camera in the left corner showed the external front camera in the middle of the screen, an approach far more in line with other foldables.
How rivals handle the layout
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, likely the main competitor to the iPhone Ultra, positions its outer camera in the middle of the display. Its inner selfie shooter sits in the middle of the right-hand half of the unfolded phone, matching the approach taken by the Z Fold 8 Ultra.
Devices such as the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, Oppo Find N6 and Huawei Mate X7 all place their internal selfie cameras in the top-right corner. In each of these cases, though, the external selfie camera sits in the middle of the display rather than to one side.
An asymmetric design
The leaked screen protector also highlighted the unusual shape of the device, which may feature square corners on one side and rounded corners on the other, adding to the asymmetry of the front-facing cameras.
Should Apple opt to place the outer selfie camera in the middle of the display, the iPhone Ultra would look and feel much like other iPhones and mainstream smartphones. Placing the camera in the corner, by contrast, could benefit the internal design by consolidating the camera modules into a single area. The foldable iPhone Ultra is expected to be revealed early next month.
