The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable handset, and early hands-on time with the device at the Apple Event suggests it could serve comfortably as a daily driver. While a foldable form factor typically brings compromises, the initial impression is one of a well-considered piece of hardware paired with thoughtful software.
Concerns around durability and design are common with folding phones, yet Apple appears to have addressed several of them from the outset. The build quality, camera features and dual-display software all point to a polished first attempt at the category.
Solid, reliable hardware
The iPhone Duo uses a polished titanium frame designed to resist scratching and improve durability. A custom hinge made up of more than 100 individual components helps support the inner display when the phone is open.
The device carries IP68 water and dust resistance, a feature the latest Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 lacks. When the phone is unfolded, there is a very slight dip on the inner display where the crease sits, though it is close to imperceptible. The centre of the display feels firm and does not flex under pressure.
Despite earlier rumours suggesting otherwise, the iPhone Duo supports MagSafe. Some questions remain around MagSafe accessory fit on the folding design.
iPhone Duo camera tricks
The camera is one area where Apple has invested heavily, focusing on the Camera app rather than the sensor itself. The iPhone Duo shares the same primary lens as the iPhone 17e, but adds several new capture modes enabled by its folding design.
Smart Take lets users prop the phone up by folding it in half, then intelligently captures photos by looking for poses. When it detects a pose or a pause, it takes a picture, continuing to shoot until switched off while attempting to avoid duplicate shots.
Kid Cue displays a colourful Snoopy animation on the exterior screen, intended to hold a child’s attention long enough to take a photo. Duo Preview shows a preview of the shot on both the inner and front displays, allowing the subject to see how the image is framed before it is taken.
Unlike the iPhone Air, the iPhone Duo supports Cinematic Mode. An under-screen FaceTime camera and the dual displays are intended to make video calls feel more personal.
The camera features form part of a broader software package built around the two screens, combining folding hardware with capture tools designed to take advantage of the form factor. The iPhone Duo carries a titanium frame, a hinge of over 100 components and IP68 water and dust resistance.
