The iPhone Duo marks a significant moment for Apple, standing as the company’s first-ever foldable iPhone. It arrives as the device that opens a new chapter at Cupertino, with John Ternus stepping into the chief executive role following the departure of Tim Cook. The handset is officially set to launch on 23 October 2026.
Ahead of its arrival, Apple has released the first batch of sample photos captured with the iPhone Duo. The company’s official Instagram channel published six images taken with the foldable, described as “Commissioned by Apple, shot on iPhone Duo”. The photographs were produced by two photographers, Jake Michaels and Jason Nocito.
What the sample photos show
The released images are polished and considered, from the colours and geometry to the backgrounds, poses and subjects themselves. Each frame is carefully composed, resembling the kind of work that might be presented at an exhibition rather than a casual snap.
Yet sample photos represent a particular category of imagery. They are intended to suggest that any photo taken with the iPhone Duo will look comparable, which is rarely the reality. A great deal goes on behind these pictures beyond the device itself. Apple can select the location, the time of day, the lighting, the composition and the models in front of the camera, while professional photographers know precisely how to extract the most from every frame.
The models are professionally styled, the scenes are carefully arranged and the lighting is frequently deliberate. Even the backgrounds and colours are chosen to complement the subject and present the phone’s camera in the best possible light. In everyday use, by contrast, people contend with poor lighting, moving subjects, cluttered backgrounds and whatever happens to be in view at a given moment.
Hardware and the foldable experience
In camera terms, neither the iPhone Duo nor the Galaxy Z Fold 8 includes a dedicated telephoto sensor. Foldables from brands such as Oppo, Xiaomi, Huawei and Honor are noted for their camera setups, but the appeal of a foldable often lies elsewhere.
Potential buyers are likely to focus on the overall iPhone Duo experience rather than the camera arrangement. Key considerations include how smoothly the device folds and unfolds, how deep or pronounced the crease is, the quality of the inner display, and the way iOS has been optimised for the foldable form factor.
A limited hands-on with the new handset took place at its announcement, with a full in-depth review to follow. The iPhone Duo goes on sale on 23 October 2026.
