Rumours about the anniversary iPhone 20 are gathering pace, with reports suggesting Apple is preparing its most significant redesign since the iPhone X. The company is said to be adapting part of the iPhone Air manufacturing process to produce new quad-curved displays, positioned as the centrepiece of an “all-glass” flagship.
Before the iPhone 20 arrives, Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 18 Pro and a foldable iPhone Ultra within weeks. Yet the focus has already shifted to the anniversary model, and specifically to whether a return to curved glass is the right direction. Samsung dropped a similar approach years ago, raising questions about the wisdom of reviving it.
Why a quad-curved iPhone 20 raises concerns
Curved displays were most prominently featured on the Galaxy S7 Edge, which looked striking but proved awkward to use. Later models improved the experience, though the core issues were never fully resolved.
Glass along the edges makes handsets less durable, produces unwanted reflections and can make everyday use less comfortable. Accidental touches remain a persistent complaint, particularly when reaching across the screen, with the palm often blocking intended input. Protective cases add a further problem: they either undermine the point of the curves or fail to shield the device effectively. Flat displays avoid all of these drawbacks, which helps explain why they returned as the dominant design across the smartphone industry.
The Tecno bezel-less concept as an alternative
A new concept phone from Tecno, a Chinese manufacturer, has drawn attention as a possible template. After teasing its Next-Gen Bezelless Concept Phone, the company sent a unit to YouTuber MKBHD, confirming the prototype is real and demonstrating the technical work behind it.
Tecno’s zero-millimetre bezel design offers an all-display look without relying on curved edges. The approach could address the durability weaknesses, accidental touches and reflections associated with curved screens. It would also allow Apple to retain the design language of some of its most successful handsets, including the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 17, while still delivering a full-screen appearance.
The iPhone 18 Pro and the foldable iPhone Ultra are due to launch in less than two weeks, ahead of the anticipated iPhone 20.
