iPhone 17 Pro cases appear to fit the newly released iPhone 18 Pro, despite Apple stating that the two generations are not case-compatible. With the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max now reaching their first owners worldwide in 2026, many buyers are asking whether last year’s accessories can protect their new devices.
The iPhone 18 Pro models carry only minimal design changes over the iPhone 17 Pro, which naturally raises questions about accessory compatibility. Apple’s official position is that cases made for the previous generation will not fit the new phones.
What Apple Says About Case Compatibility
Apple maintains that iPhone 17 Pro cases are not compatible with the iPhone 18 Pro. The reason given is that this year’s Pro models feature a slightly thicker camera plateau. On that basis, the company advises buyers that accessories are not interchangeable between the two models.
The distinction, however, comes down to a very small measurement. The new camera plateau measures 11.5 mm, compared with 11.4 mm on the iPhone 17 Pro, a difference of just one-tenth of a millimetre.
Why the Cases Still Fit in Practice
Independent testing tells a different story. The iPhone 17 Pro cases reportedly fitted the iPhone 18 Pro without issue during hands-on checks, and the measured difference in camera plateau thickness, while real, is minimal. In practice, cases should be interchangeable between the two models, with the possible exception of certain rare third-party designs.
If you own a case that fits extremely snugly around the camera plateau, you may notice some difficulty using it on the newer model. Otherwise, the fit should be reliable.
Users have also found that iPhone 18 Pro cases fit the iPhone 17 Pro without problems, a discovery made when Apple’s new cases began arriving and ending up on last year’s phones. One user reported that a third-party case listed compatibility with both models directly on its packaging a month before launch.
The gap between the official guidance and real-world results comes down to a technicality.
