The Galaxy Z Flip 8 arrives with modest hardware upgrades, but its refined design offers a more noticeable improvement in everyday use than the spec sheet might suggest. Rather than sweeping changes, Samsung has focused on making the foldable thinner, lighter and easier to handle.
The Flip 8 weighs 180 grams, down from the 188 grams of the Flip 7. When unfolded it measures just 6.1mm thick, while folded it comes in at 13.1mm, compared with 6.5mm and 13.7mm on the previous generation. A subtle taper along the flat sides makes the device easier to open, a small touch that matters for a phone opened dozens of times a day. The crease has also been refined and is now less noticeable.
Display and design
The signature colour this year is pink, a shade not previously chosen for a Samsung flagship, indicating the company’s positioning for this model. The Flip 8 keeps the 6.9-inch main screen with a tall 21:9 aspect ratio, taller than a typical non-folding smartphone. The familiar flat sides remain, now with the slight taper that improves the unfolding experience.
Cameras and software
The camera hardware carries over, with a 50MP main sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide lens. Image quality has changed little, suggesting Flip phones have reached something of a plateau. A few new features have been added, including Horizontal Lock for steady video stabilisation that keeps the horizon level even when the camera is rotated a full 360 degrees. My FanCam allows users to film a group and then select a single performer, with the video cropping and following that person.
The Flip 8 runs One UI 9 on top of Android 17. Cover screen customisation is now more accessible, letting users select which apps appear and create custom cards without relying on additional modules. Gemini serves as the main assistant and can be accessed by long pressing the power button.
Battery life and charging remain unchanged from the previous model. The device is more expensive this year, in line with wider trends across the gadget market.
