Apple has appointed Nate Gatten as its new head of government affairs, a move that positions the company to strengthen its engagement with the Trump administration.
The appointment comes as Apple prepares for a series of leadership changes in the near term. The company is set to complete a CEO transition, with John Ternus succeeding Tim Cook on 1 September. A day before that switch, Apple will install a new vice president to oversee its dealings with government.
What the New Role Involves
According to a memo from SVP and General Counsel Jennifer Newstead, Gatten will take over as vice president of Government Affairs. The memo states that he will begin the role on 31 August, one day ahead of the wider executive transition at the top of the company.
The government affairs function typically manages a company’s relationships with lawmakers, regulators and officials across various levels of government. For a company of Apple’s scale, that remit spans policy areas ranging from trade and taxation to competition and technology regulation.
Timing Alongside Wider Leadership Changes
The hire arrives during a period of significant reshuffling at Apple. With Ternus stepping into the chief executive position at the start of September, the appointment of a new government affairs lead adds to the roster of senior personnel changes taking effect around the same window.
Placing Gatten in the role on 31 August ensures continuity in the company’s government relations operations as the broader executive handover unfolds. The move underlines the importance Apple attaches to maintaining close contact with policymakers at a time of transition within its own leadership.
Gatten will formally assume his responsibilities as vice president of Government Affairs on 31 August 2026.
