Apple’s Kentucky iPhone glass plant is set to become a far larger element of the company’s supply chain, with hundreds of permanent and temporary roles expected as production increases. The Harrodsburg facility is poised to add 200 permanent jobs as manufacturing scales up.
Apple has sourced glass for the iPhone from Kentucky for 20 years. The site in Harrodsburg is where the technology company plans to expand production of the glass used in every iPhone and Apple Watch.
Expansion at the Harrodsburg facility
Apple’s ambition is for the glass in every iPhone to be manufactured in Kentucky. The expansion follows a further investment of roughly £1.9 billion made a year earlier, with the aim of doubling the number of jobs at the plant and tripling its current output.
The additional 200 permanent positions form part of a broader plan that also includes temporary roles as the site increases its manufacturing capacity. The move strengthens the state’s long-standing position within the iPhone supply chain.
Leadership tour of the plant
Apple Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick toured Corning Inc. on Friday. The visit came one year after Apple committed the additional investment in Kentucky.
The glass produced at the site is used across Apple’s iPhone and Apple Watch product lines, underlining the plant’s role in supplying key components for the company’s devices.
