Regulators press for third-party app stores
Apple has consistently maintained that it has the resources to protect users from harmful apps, and it repeats this assurance to regulators. As authorities around the world push for third-party firms to operate iPhone app stores, Apple argues that only it can properly keep bad apps at bay.
Opening the door to rival app stores does carry genuine risk. Should alternative marketplaces become widespread, there is likely to be a surge of apps designed to defraud users.
