Amazon drone delivery has been put to the test, and early impressions suggest the service is effective enough to warrant repeat use. Following a hands-on trial carried out on Thursday, the airborne delivery option proved fast and free, though notably loud in operation.
The assessment comes after Amazon significantly expanded the reach of its drone delivery service earlier this week. Rough calculations indicate that the aerial delivery network now covers around 3,500 square miles more than it did just days earlier, bringing far more households within range.
How the drone delivery worked
As part of the wider expansion, one household fell within the newly extended service footprint, allowing the delivery method to be trialled directly. The package was flown in and dropped at the front of the property, with the drone descending into the front garden to complete the delivery.
The experience was described as effective, with a clear intention to use the service again. Speed and the absence of a delivery charge stood out as the main advantages of the airborne delivery method, marking a practical alternative to conventional ground-based deliveries.
Noise remains a consideration
Alongside the positives, noise was identified as a defining characteristic of the operation. The drone was distinctly loud during its approach and descent, a factor likely to be relevant for households considering the service in residential areas.
The recent expansion means a substantially larger area is now eligible for Amazon aerial deliveries than before, with the growing footprint bringing the technology to a wider range of addresses. The service continues to combine rapid, no-cost delivery with an aircraft that makes its presence clearly heard on arrival.
