iPhone Handoff is coming to iOS 27, and T-Mobile has confirmed it will charge customers £4 per month to use the feature. The e-SIM capability allows the same phone number to be shared across two separate iPhones, with carrier support required to enable it.
At launch, only T-Mobile subscribers in the United States and Deutsche Telekom users in Germany will be able to access iPhone Handoff. T-Mobile says customers can use their number across two compatible iPhone models and choose which handset is active at any given time.
How iPhone Handoff Works
Apple is introducing support for iPhone Handoff in iOS 27. The feature requires two iPhones running iOS 27 or later, both connected to Wi-Fi and signed into the same Apple Account, with FaceTime, iMessage, and Messages in iCloud switched on. It can be enabled when activating a new iPhone or later through the Settings app.
When active, one iPhone acts as the main device and the other serves as the secondary handset sharing the same number. Moving between the two happens automatically when you unlock either device. A phone number can only be active on one iPhone at a time.
With an eligible plan, features including calls, texts, data, mobile hotspot, Scam Shield, and T-Satellite will function on both devices.
Wallet, Dual SIM, and Limitations
Payment cards in the Wallet app and car keys can work across both iPhones. However, Apple warns that some Wallet items such as transit passes, IDs, or corporate badges may only work on one iPhone at a time. iPhone Handoff also does not transfer an Apple Watch from one iPhone to another.
The feature works with Dual SIM as long as both eSIMs are from carriers that support iPhone Handoff. Both eSIMs switch simultaneously when you unlock your iPhone, and each eSIM must be set up separately.
Once configured, iPhone Handoff remains active until you contact your carrier to turn it off. Full guidance is available in Apple’s support documentation for the feature.
iOS 27 is set to launch on Monday, 14 September, while the new iPhone 18 Pro models will arrive on Friday, 18 September.
