The VW ID Tiguan is Volkswagen’s newest electric SUV, previewed for the first time under camouflage and set to replace the current VW ID 4. The German automaker has confirmed an early 2027 launch in Europe, with a United States arrival to follow later.
The compact electric SUV becomes the third vehicle in Volkswagen’s global range to adopt a name aligned with the brand’s combustion and hybrid models, following the ID Polo and ID Cross. Volkswagen says positioning the model as an electric variant of the familiar Tiguan makes it easier for customers to understand the vehicle’s size and capabilities, rather than relying on the more abstract numeral used previously.
Design and Styling
The EV was shown in yellow camouflage, revealing proportions and details similar to those of the current-generation Tiguan. Visible through small cutouts, the headlamps and light signature appear sharper and more angular, while the tail lights take on a more geometric look than the combustion version. Electric vehicles generally require smaller grilles than combustion cars, suggesting closer attention has been paid to aerodynamics, though the overall shape and sculpting remain close to the existing Tiguan.
Two versions of the ID Tiguan appear in the preview: a likely standard configuration and a sportier variant with unique wheels and what appears to be the Tiguan’s more aggressive R-Line bumper. On the combustion model, that detail points to either the R-Line styling package or a higher-powered Tiguan Turbo specification. Volkswagen has previously stated that its use of “Turbo” on the combustion Tiguan denotes increased performance rather than the presence of a turbocharger, leaving open the possibility that the same logic could be applied to the EV. Porsche has used the Taycan Turbo name for its high-performance electric saloon for years despite it also lacking a turbocharger.
Powertrain and Availability
Volkswagen has not released details on the ID Tiguan’s electric powertrain, performance or range. The current ID 4 provides a baseline for expectations, with more concrete specifications anticipated when the model makes its world premiere in early October.
In the United States, the ID Tiguan will replace the ID 4 and will be sold alongside the combustion and hybrid-electric Tiguan models. A Volkswagen representative confirmed the brand would share North American timing and additional market-specific details following its European launch in early 2027.
The new electric Tiguan will reach Europe in early 2027, with the United States market to follow.
