Suno’s v6 is the company’s first AI music model developed with support from the record industry, marking a shift in how its systems are trained. According to Suno’s Jack Brody, v6 was “trained from the ground up, with a new set of data that does not include the same data that our previous models were trained on.”
The training data for v6 includes content licensed from partners Warner Music Group, BMG, and Believe, alongside “user data.” It remains unclear whether this means the v6 training data is entirely free of dubiously obtained content.
Three models under one release
One of the most significant changes with v6 is that it is not a single system but three distinct models: v6, v6-wild, and v6-mini. The v6-mini model is available for free to all users and is focused on fast generation, sitting at the entry point of the range.
This tiered approach separates the standard offering from a more experimental variant and a lightweight, speed-oriented option. By splitting the release across three models, Suno provides different levels of access and capability rather than a one-size-fits-all tool.
Licensing and the record industry
The involvement of major music companies represents a notable development for Suno, which has previously faced scrutiny over the origins of its training material. Licensing arrangements with Warner Music Group, BMG, and Believe indicate a more formal relationship between the AI music platform and established rights holders.
Brody’s description of a fresh training foundation suggests Suno has moved away from reusing the datasets behind its earlier models. However, the inclusion of “user data” and the lack of full transparency around the complete dataset mean questions remain about whether every element of the v6 training material was cleanly sourced.
The release positions v6 as a distinct generation of Suno’s technology, built on new data and shaped in part by cooperation with record labels. The free availability of v6-mini extends access to the fast generation model across Suno’s user base.
