Qualcomm has previewed the upgraded Hexagon NPU that features in the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, ahead of its formal unveiling. The chip, alongside the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 SoC, is set to be introduced at the company’s annual Snapdragon Summit on 22 September.
The refreshed neural processing unit has been engineered specifically for agentic AI, placing an emphasis on transformer workloads and improved on-device responsiveness. Qualcomm says the redesign targets the demands of always-running AI, long-context reasoning, multimodal models, concurrent agents and low-latency action loops.
What the new Hexagon NPU delivers
At the heart of the upgrade sits a transformer-focused Element Accelerator, described as purpose-built for the transformer workloads that underpin modern generative and agentic AI. Working in tandem with the NPU’s scalar, vector and matrix extensions, it accelerates the operations that matter most for large models. Qualcomm states this helps agents respond faster, reason more efficiently and deliver richer experiences without compromising mobile power efficiency.
The NPU also carries a 50% larger shared memory, which keeps frequently accessed model data close to the processing unit. According to Qualcomm, this allows agents to stay responsive as they handle longer context, more tools and concurrent tasks, reducing memory bottlenecks and enabling faster, more responsive agentic AI experiences.
Performance gains for modern AI models
Qualcomm reports that the new Hexagon NPU offers up to 50% faster prefill for INT4 models. It is also described as well suited to Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) models, which activate only a fraction of their parameters per token, an approach that has become increasingly common in large-scale AI deployments.
These improvements point to Qualcomm’s focus on running sophisticated AI tasks directly on mobile hardware, rather than relying on cloud processing. The combination of the Element Accelerator, expanded shared memory and faster prefill is positioned to support agents that must juggle multiple tools and tasks simultaneously while maintaining low latency.
Full technical specifications for both the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro are expected to be confirmed at the Snapdragon Summit on 22 September.
