The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold 2 is reportedly being fast-tracked, with the company said to be accelerating development in response to the recent reveal of Apple’s foldable device and the strong early performance of its own latest handsets.
Foldable phones have long occupied a niche within the wider handset market, despite showcasing some of the industry’s most eye-catching engineering. With Apple now entering the segment, broader public interest is expected to follow, and Samsung appears keen to capitalise on the momentum.
Accelerated Release Timeline
Following the unveiling of the iPhone Duo and buoyant early sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra, Samsung is said to be preparing a competing device. According to known leaker Lanzuk, a successor to the original TriFold has been in development for months, with detailed patents suggesting the new model could be wider and shorter, and may include a dedicated slot for the S Pen stylus.
Samsung is now reportedly weighing an accelerated schedule that could bring the next Galaxy Z TriFold to market in late 2026 or early 2027. Earlier reports had pointed towards a launch closer to late 2027, making the revised timeline a notable shift.
Pricing and Market Positioning
The first Galaxy Z TriFold had an expensive, limited release in the United States. Available from January, it carried a commanding starting price of around £2,300 and sold out quickly before being discontinued three months later. It felt very much like an experimental entry in Samsung’s mobile line-up, but a second model could signal a more serious commitment to the tri-fold form factor.
According to the same leak, Samsung wants to produce the new handset at a “nearly identical” price, despite rising hardware costs. With buyers reportedly willing to pay more than £2,400 for high-end iPhone Duo configurations, the segment could prove more competitive than ever before.
It is worth noting that the iPhone Duo has not yet reached shops and will not do so for roughly another month. Online buzz counts for little if the device does not sell well, so Samsung may be monitoring the market’s reaction to the Duo before reallocating any development resources.
The fact that the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 has reportedly been under development for some time suggests a shift in plans could reflect renewed urgency and confidence in the category. A Samsung representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The iPhone Duo is due to be released on 23 October with a starting price of around £1,600.
