The latest Pixel security update addresses 110 vulnerabilities, among them a zero-day flaw that has already been actively exploited in what Google has described as targeted attacks. Owners of compatible Pixel handsets are urged to install the update as soon as it becomes available.
Google confirmed the seriousness of the situation, stating: “All supported Google devices will receive an update to the 2026-09-05 patch level. We encourage all customers to accept these updates to their devices.”
Why the zero-day flaw matters
A zero-day attack exploits a flaw before developers have had the chance to release a fix. The vulnerability in this case has been assigned the identifier CVE-2026-58704 and concerns a possible permission bypass caused by a logic error in the code.
Of particular concern, no user interaction is required for an attacker to exploit the flaw. The issue stems from improper authorisation and protection mechanism failure weaknesses affecting the Modem subcomponent, meaning devices could be compromised without any action from the owner.
What the 110 patches cover
The monthly Pixel bulletin includes 110 security fixes in total, comprising 12 remote code execution flaws and 89 privilege escalation vulnerabilities rated critical or high severity. Only one of these was a zero-day flaw.
Alongside the security work, the update delivers a broad set of bug fixes and functional improvements. A fix addressing a crash in the Google app under certain conditions has been sent to all devices from the Pixel 6 series through to the Pixel 10a, as has a fix for a problem causing devices to heat up while game performance lagged and framerates appeared choppy during graphics-intensive tasks. A further fix resolving slow database operations related to Android System Intelligence, which could leave a device unresponsive, was also distributed across the same range of models.
Devices in the Pixel 10 series received fixes for gaming apps crashing on launch, a problem that under certain conditions prevented users from activating Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and a system crash that could occur when apps were installed, uninstalled or updated. The Pixel Tablet received a fix for a camera stability issue that caused the camera system to crash under certain conditions.
An additional fix addresses an issue where enabling the magnification shortcut could cause quick swipes to scroll in the opposite direction. Users who receive the update on a compatible Pixel device should install it without delay, given that the patched zero-day has already been exploited in the wild.
