The new Miele HX3 and HX3 Plus Aqua cordless vacuums bring meaningful improvements over the brand’s previous generation, addressing several of the shortcomings that held back the earlier HX2 model. Shown at the Miele Experience Center in Manhattan ahead of the IFA 2026 show in Berlin, the redesigned lineup focuses on better weight distribution, stronger cleaning performance and added versatility.
Miele has long held a reputation as one of the most respected names in home appliances and cleaning. However, the earlier HX2 cordless vacuum drew criticism for underwhelming results in sand tests on low and midpile carpet, along with a design that proved fiddly compared with lighter rivals from Dyson and Shark. At a full price of roughly £850, it was a difficult purchase to justify.
Redesigned Weight Balance and Flexible Configurations
Rather than a complete overhaul, the HX3 introduces a rebalanced weight distribution that places more of the load towards the bottom, reducing strain on the upper body during use. The motor and waste bin can be repositioned depending on how the nozzles are attached, giving users control over where the weight falls. A more top-heavy setup, for example, suits cleaning ceiling corners and higher spaces.
The vacuum offers a three-in-one configuration, converting into a self-standing vacuum, a traditional stick vac or a handheld. Additional refinements include push-button controls, easier dustbin emptying, finer particle capture, automatic flooring-type detection and the ability to stand upright. Battery life is rated at 70 minutes, which Miele says is enough to clean around 1,700 square feet on a single charge. Some models include an extended battery for longer sessions.
Improved Cleaning Performance and a First Mopping Attachment
The most notable gains come in cleaning performance. The HX3 delivers markedly better pickup on both carpet and hard flooring. In a hands-on session using condiments to imitate sand and pet hair, the vacuum removed most or all of the pet hair with a single back-and-forth motion, while the simulated sand was cleared easily on hardwood.
A powerful Boost mode provides extra suction beyond the highest standard setting. Because it drains the battery quickly, it is limited to 10 seconds at a time.
The HX3 Plus Aqua matches the standard model but adds Miele’s first mopping attachment, the Aqua Twister Floorhead. It features dual spinning mop pads that are machine washable, a 300-millilitre water tank and a 360-degree light. During testing on hard flooring, the amount of water dispensed proved fully adjustable, allowing users to address larger messes and spills. When the mopping head is attached, Boost mode also dispenses more water.
