Durable foldables are becoming a defining battleground in the mobile market, and the iPhone Duo and Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold both aim to reassure buyers spending significant sums that their handsets can cope with everyday demands. While thinness and screen size often dominate foldable launches, protection against water and dust is a growing priority for many shoppers.
Both devices carry an IP68 rating, a relative rarity among folding phones. The Duo is rated to withstand submersion up to six metres, while the Pixel manages 1.5 metres, each for up to 30 minutes. Both are also dust resistant, meaning a trip to the beach need not spell disaster for either handset.
Pricing sits at the premium end. The iPhone Duo starts at roughly £1,580 for 256GB, while the Pixel 11 Pro Fold begins at around £1,500 for the same storage. Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo open on 16 October, ahead of a 23 October release. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is already available.
Different Designs for Different Needs
The clearest distinction between the two lies in their form factors. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold adopts a more traditional book-style design, with a cover screen closely matching the proportions of a standard slab phone. Opened out, its expansive display suits films and multitasking, and the closed device feels much like a conventional handset.
The iPhone Duo takes a passport-shaped approach, giving it a squatter, more compact cover screen and a short, wide inner display. This layout works well for landscape video and vertical content in portrait, adapting more naturally to a wider range of formats. When opened, the Duo essentially expands into something resembling an iPad Mini.
Displays, Dimensions and Build
The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch inner display. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold offers a taller 6.5-inch cover screen and a larger 8-inch main display. Google states the Pixel’s cover screen uses a new glass ceramic that is more resistant to scratches and cracks.
A notable difference is the iPhone Duo’s matte, nano-texture inner display, which helps reduce reflections and makes the crease less noticeable. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold lacks an anti-reflective coating, leaving its crease more visible.
Both handsets are slim. The iPhone Duo measures 5.2mm thick when open and 11.3mm when closed, weighing 254 grams. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold edges ahead at 5mm open and 10.1mm closed, weighing 239 grams. That lighter figure is likely assisted by the Pixel’s aluminium frame, compared with the titanium construction used on the iPhone Duo.
