iPhone Duo: One-Handed Use Tested by Left-Handers
The iPhone Duo raises questions for left-handed users on one-handed use, alongside Face ID speculation and confirmed pre-order dates and pricing.

The iPhone Duo has raised questions among left-handed users about whether Apple’s first foldable can be comfortably held and operated with one hand. A key concern is the absence of Face ID on the device, which may require a left-handed user to reach across the display to tap the Touch ID sensor.

A further issue is the placement of the vertical app dock on the right side of the internal display, making it an awkward stretch for a southpaw. This particular problem is one Apple could seemingly address through a software update, adding an option to relocate the dock to the opposite side.

What left-handed users should know

A video shared on Instagram by Byte Review’s Tom Hitchins demonstrated how the iPhone Duo can be operated one-handed by a left-handed user. Hitchins appeared slightly unsteady holding and operating the device with his left hand, though he noted that he is right-handed.

The external display posed little difficulty, and it seemed that any area of the 5.4-inch external screen was reachable with the device held in the left hand. With the internal display unfolded, Hitchins did not attempt to tap the app icons in the dock, which may prove to be one of the main challenges for left-handed users.

Much depends on how an individual holds their smartphone. Some prefer to hold the device with their dominant hand, while others use their weaker hand to hold it, keeping the stronger hand free for tasks. The size of a user’s hands is also a significant factor, as larger hands can compensate for a tendency to favour the left hand.

When to expect Face ID and pricing details

There is speculation that Apple will add Face ID to the third-generation Duo. Any hardware changes are unlikely to arrive with next year’s foldable iPhone. Those waiting for a version featuring a telephoto camera will probably have to wait until the 2028 iPhone Duo.

Apple will begin accepting pre-orders for the iPhone Duo on 16 October, with the first foldable iPhone released one week later on 23 October. Pricing starts at approximately £1,580 for the 256GB model and rises to around £2,530 for the 2TB variant.

The official iPhone Duo case from Apple will cost around £62 in Sand or Navy Blue, with pre-orders also opening on 16 October and a release date of 23 October. A MagSafe Charger with a 1-metre or 2-metre cable will be priced at approximately £31 and £39 respectively. A 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max will be available for around £31.
